Your Art Can Help Keep a Child Alive.

A Day to Remember, A Day to Act

The Day of the African Child is celebrated every year on June 16th. This year, Young Heroes Foundation is turning it into a day of action on behalf of the AIDS orphans of Swaziland.

From New Jersey to Washington, people all across the country will hold house parties to raise funds to support children in need through Young Heroes Foundation. Because we're based in Northampton, MA, we're planning to mark the occasion in a bigger way: with a festive dance party and art auction.

To do that, we're asking the artists of western Massachusetts to help.

A Way for Artists to Help

* We're asking artists to donate a small, inexpensive work in any medium for a lottery for everyone who buys a ticket to the event. Tickets will cost $50, and the artworks will be given at random by lottery.

* You could create a piece based on the theme of young heroes or donate a piece that already exists. We are also seeking artists who would be willing to donate a more substantial piece to be sold in a live auction. You'll be in good company, as one anonymous donor has pledged original signed lithographs by Robert Rauschenberg and Susan Rothenberg , if we can secure 10 other works that will sell for at least $500-$1000 each. If you choose to do this, you can set the conditions, including a reserve price or percentage of the proceeds that will return to you.

Whatever you can give, you'll know that your art will be helping children who have nothing. Along with food and warm clothing, your donation will give them the hope that comes from knowing that someone cares - on a day that is all too often filled with empty promises.

The deadline to donate your contribution is June 1st. To pledge your piece, send an email to steve@youngheroes.org.sz or call Steve Kallaugher at 413.586.2953. We'll feature you here on this page, as well as in upcoming publicity and at the event itself.

And we guarantee this: 100% of the funds we raise will go directly to support orphan families.

About Young Heroes Foundation

Young Heroes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation. Now entering its fourth year, the program was founded by Leeds native Steve Kallaugher while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Swaziland, the country with the world's highest rate of HIV. Young Heroes provides monthly stipends directly to orphan households for children's food, clothing and other necessities.

In addition, a new Young Heroes education program is paying full costs for 24 orphans at three secondary schools in Siteki, Swaziland. We're working now on a program of medical care for all our HIV+ orphans, which we hope to implement later this year.

Because all our operating costs are underwritten by Swaziland's National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA), 100% of all funds we raise now go directly to the orphans.
