 A Day to Remember
On June 16, 1976, thousands of school children in Soweto, South Africa, walked out of school to protest their inferior education. In the two weeks that followed, more than 100 people were killed and more than a thousand injured.
To commemorate their bravery, the Organization of African Unity designated June 16th as the Day of the African Child. It has been celebrated annually since 1991.
But for too many African children, June 16th remains just another day of poverty, hunger and need.
This year, you can help make it a day of hope.
A Way to Help.
Young Heroes Foundation supports over 1,000 AIDS orphans in Swaziland, the nation with the world's highest rate of HIV, with monthly stipends for food, clothing and other necessities.
This year, we're asking people all across America to hold house parties to raise funds for the orphans on or around June 16th, to make the Day of the African Child a day of action on their behalf. From Massachusetts to Washington, people have already responded to our call.
Our goal: 100 parties that raise $500 each. By raising $50,000, Young Heroes can feed over 300 orphans for an entire year.
Do It Your Way.
There are hundreds of ways that you can have fun with your friends and neighbors, while helping children who have nothing. Because June 16th is a Tuesday, you might even choose to have your party on a nearby weekend. (To see what Young Heroes Foundation is doing, click here.)
- A barbecue
- A potluck dinner
- A wine tasting
- A school sports event
- A golf outing
- A church or temple gathering
- A game night
What you do is up to you. We'll help by providing you with background information about Young Heroes and the plight of the orphans, to help you spread the word. You can even use a portion of the contributions you raise to defray your costs - making your contribution the time and energy you put into your event, if you so choose. Because Young Heroes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all contributions are tax deductible.
We'll be grateful for any support you give, and we guarantee that 100% of the funds you raise will go directly to sponsoring the children. To learn more about Young Heroes, click on the menus above.
To register your party and see it featured here, send an email to steve@youngheroes.org.sz. These people and organizations have already pledged to help. We hope you'll join them.
